C., ) Amer. astronomer, Prof, of Mathematics U.S.N.; one of the principal observers of the Washington Zones with the Transit and Mural-Circle of the Naval Observatory, of which instruments he had charge, afterward one of the professors at the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and then superintendent of the American Ephemeri and Nautical Almanac till 1877; a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and successively its secretary and treasurer.
